Greetings and Salutations to all noise freaks!

I’m back… I know I have disappeared and may have disappointed
quite a few people out there and I sincerely apologize; but due to a
job change and a huge move that took me to Japan, I have not been able
to concentrate on noise. The English teaching job that I have, has
really transferred me around Western Japan, but I have now been
permanently and securely stationed at a nice industrial city in the
Northern Kyushu area.

I hope everyone enjoyed the Freak Animal issue #11 that was put
out a while back by Mikko Aspa. I would like to thank Mikko for the
opportunity, the great format, an ass kicking CD and killer layout. I
think the issue was beautiful! I would also like to thank Spite
Recordings, Randy Yau, Flutter, Deathpile, Abfall, Stimbox and Death
Squad. You guys rock!!! I can’t thank you enough for your cooperation.
You were all a pleasure to work with and I hope if any future
opportunities arise to take on some quality projects that you might
think of me as a possible partner. Thanks again!

The following reviews are a bit of new stuff that I have received
over the 2 years I haven’t written anything. I hope you enjoy them and
don’t find them being too out of date. Please feel free to drop my a
note and tell me what you think.

K2 - Live drive to 2000 - cassette - KMI-035
This is an
other beauty that I picked up from JNR in Tokyo. I have never seen or
heard K2 live before, so this was and still is, a special treat for me.
K2’s sound has always been a bit unique in the way Kimihide collimates
his collaged noise. High energy and harsh layers of powerful, fast
paced confusion riddle both of the live tracks presented on this
cassette. Both shows were performed in Japan during November of 1999.
They are a mix of his classic trademark style and a more feedback based
touch, warped together to make a constant clamor that in many ways will
make you wonder why there aren’t more live releases from Kimihide. So
write him and ask, his English is quite good and although I haven’t
written him in a long time, he always replied to my letters when I was
back in the States. Kinky Musik Institute c/o Kimihide Kusafuka, Crest

FLUTTER - Unreleased Material
Last year when I went back to
Chicago over the Christmas break, I was super fucking lucky and very
appreciative to have received 2 cassettes of unreleased material from
Jeff after a tentative plan for a show fell through. I know you
remember me walling on very highly of this artist and soon you’ll all
have the undisputed proof that this kid is all that and a bag of chips!
A 100 percent of pure, unrestricted noise chaos for the fast paced
noise freak in all of us. No mellow sound creations here to make you
wonder if this was worth the money you spent, just well crafted
complete harsh noise. Although on this tape has the tracks were
recorded without much of a time lapse, they are easy enough to
distinguish. The pieces are screeching, beeping, searing there way into
you noise fetish filled mind. One track is from the Split with Ames
Sanglantes on Xerxes. This track I’ve heard in many different stages of
it’s creation, going all the way back to the time I experienced Flutter
live with Napalm Jesus a few years ago. This track is a fucking
masterpiece. I starts with a blues harmonica riff mixed with a blast of
noise repeated and mixed with other harsh elements until the about 3
minutes into the track and there is no remnants of the harmonica.
Exceptional stuff, I recommend trying to obtain this if you can.
Everything on the 2 cassettes is relentless. I believe there will be a
Ground Fault CD release soon. As well as a compilation track on
gRewriting the Bookh released by EAJ Records. There is also a long
track on one of the cassettes that was suppose to be released as a
split with Facialmess, but due to an illness was never released and
probably never will be. So if you are like me and want to hear this duo
and unlike me have a label… please contact Jeff of Flutter. Flutter,

FACIALMESS/TIMISOARA - split cassette - Xerxes es-32
When I
was on my way returning to the States to visit my folks. I stopped in
Tokyo for a night on the town with my girlfriend and if possible to get
some new noise. So after arriving in Tokyo that night we ate at a
wonderful isakaya, (a Japanese style restaurant) near the hotel. The
next morning we got up early and planned out the day that included,
eating again, shopping for her and shopping at JNR for me. JNR is a
wonderful all noise record shop and for me, just plan heaven. It is
here that I bought this cassette that I am listening to as I write
this. Kenny of Facialmess is one of the nicest guys you’ll ever talk to
and easily one of the harshest noise artists today. This cassette is
similar to prior releases, but different in the key use of low
frequencies that comfort and soothe while his trademark bombastic
anarchy is unleashed. If you could somehow imagine the sound of the
world coming to a stop, as a locomotive would in slow monition and
terrifyingly slam in to a bus full of school children. All of the lives
that would be flashing before your eyes in a time warp only designed to
destroy your faith in anything you might hold sacred. This is the
reason I listen to noise, I desire to be taken away from the bleak
truth of the real world. Kenny’s sounds have without fail been the
strongest drug I have ever experienced. As for the other side, wow!
Keiko starts her track off a bit moody with lots of low ended grumbling
frequencies and builds some very tame, but detecting higher ones in the
background. Building them up and creating some type of siren type
drones in the mix. The tack is subtle in increasing the volume and
sheer power, then again regresses in to the marvelous mulch of drone,
grumbling and harsh feedback. This would be a great sound track to a
movie that has a long and horrify scene of someone lost in a
treacherous jungle. It’s that fucking creepy and down right moving.
Keiko’s track is a fantastic compliment to Facialmess’ and vice versa.
I haven’t heard a better balanced split in a very longer time. Now that
I am in Japan, my only wish now is to meet them in person to tell them
face to face that their contributions to noise are greatly appreciated.

Stimbox/A.E.C. - split I got this as a parting gift when I visited
Tim and his lovely wife Hiroko while I and my girlfriend were in San
Francisco about a year and a half ago. Everybody out there knows I am a
huge Stimbox listener, so this review wont come to you as a surprise,
but what will, is that this is some of Tim’s very best work. I’m dead
serious. Swirling and generating harsh audio bless much different than
that of Stimbox’s prior releases. The sound is more calculated and
precise than those pieces of his in the past. This track is a bit
brief, but is testament that although recently Stimbox is not very
active, his sound continues to develop and evolve itself. Tim’s brand
of spring-type, sound sources is evident in the piece, but not
prominent. The psychedelic harshness of the track creates an euphoric
atmosphere and relaxes the inner mind from it’s daily worries. If you
want to hear what the hell I am babbling on about, check it out for
yourself at http:/www.mp3.com. Be sure to type in Stimbox within the
search engine and you’ll be able to listen to some of Tim’s newer work.
The actual piece I have been talking about is called D2. Enjoy! Stimbox

STEGM - Clocked - cassette HOS-47
This was the best
surprise I have received in a long time. I have never heard of this
artist, but I am going to make sure you all aren’t in the dark like I
was. The noise on here is excellent! From harsh power electronic type
noise to serene whispers of reprieve, before the hostility resumes.
This is very moody stuff. The sounds are represented well by the blood
red cover, thick and full life. The noise is pure and I would say,
there is a little something for everyone with STEGM. This cassette is
not long, so I will soon have to purchase another release to comfort me
on those long sleepless nights when sheer white noise can’t help me
drift off to sleep. Contact Hospital Productions for more information
about STEGM and other surprises. hospitalprod@hotmail.com

Richard Ramirez - Mistaken Genital Apparatus - cassette shf-009
This baby is rare and it cost me a pretty penny, but as I anticipated,
it’s just what the doctor ordered. I like most of everything Richard
has done. I have over 10 of his releases as a solo artist alone, not
including BLJ or other material and I could honestly tell you this is
probably one of his best releases. The only problem is that the sound
quality is a bit poor. It must have been dubbed that way, but if you
play it a bit louder than normal it will sound just fine. The noise is
hate-filled harsh white noise with bits of voice to induce dismal
feelings of hopelessness, suffering, and sheer anguish. I love the
packaging, even though it was difficult to open, it was worth the
little blood in truth, I shed while trying to open it. Most of the
frequencies are high piecing blips and beeps that are garbled together
to create a psychoticly long, hellion noise masterpiece. Now, I know
there are those of you out there that aren’t very impressed with
Richard or his work, but this is impressive. If you are a true lover of
noise, than do yourself a favor and open your mind, light a candle, cut
the lights, put on your favorite porno, lower the sound on the tube,
pump up the noise and get ready to enjoy. You will not be disappointed!
This is a really long playing cassette, so it’s going to be a long
night! Richard Ramirez, 17010 Blairwood, Houston, Texas 77049, USA

Audible X.X.Y. - Tornado in my living room - cassette
This
is a must have! I repeat, you must own this cassette to fulfill all of
your childhood nightmares. I believe it is the best recording from
Audible X.X.Y. and will scare the living shit out of you. I have never
heard anything that has so perfectly personified it’s title. This is
the sonic sound of what a real tornado might actually sound like. I
mean, it is really terrifying stuff! The noise contained here is
completely and exceedingly traumatic to those whom might have been
unlucky enough to witness such a vengeful sight in every aspect, from
the creation and anticipation to the destruction and devastation.
Certainly not in that order, but in the full range of noises that are
presented on the cassette, and with this at respectable volume levels,
you can feel the rape of the land. So be sure to fuck up the neighbors
with this recording. Volume here will be a fucking necessity!
…possibly a basement? You have been warned! Knot Music/Audible

Sickness/Gasoline man - Split CD
Do you know these two
artists? For the longest time I have just been one of the guys who
would say, gOh yeah, I have heard OF them. Now I am lucky enough to
write to you today and warn you not to be like me and get to know these
artiest as soon as your fingers can write or type. These guys are the
real deal! Sickness’ first track of three is so mind numbing that when
I began to start realizing that I was just staring off in the space
(actually at my stereo) it was that controlling. In fact, so unsettling
I had to listen to the same track again because I could hardly believe
my ears. Unbelievable stuff and I hadn’t even heard the 2nd track yet!
Needless to say the entire CD is noteworthy, but the length is a bit
insufficient, about a half hour. Still if you don’t know these names
very well, be confident that the noise is all you could ever ask from a
noise manipulator. Gasolineman is better than I had anticipated. I
originally thought that it was more collage based stuff that I might
find disappointing. This is not the case, high pitched feedback with
plenty of variety that will most certainly entertain and amuse the
family of four across the street who have a restraining order on you.

Kazumoto Endo - While You Were Out - Boxcd011/Kant008
I
realize that anyone who likes noise will probably own this, but this
review is more for the skeptics out there. For those of you who thought
that Killer Bug was just another noise band, gYou were wrong!h. Those
of you think that there isn’t any noise that is worth listening to, and
for those out there who think that noise is just noise and how can
anybody take that cap seriously… any of you fitting the prior
descriptions need to purchase this CD and become a believer. If you
have any doubts about harsh noise than you too must also listen to
this. It is for your own good, for I have it and I am listening to it
now. When I first bought this, I knew it was going to be good, but I
had know an idea to the extent of the brilliance that could be
portrayed through Kazumoto’s sound. This is not only loud, harsh bits
of twisted and manipulated Pandemonium, it is for lack of better
words… fucking penetrating and down right contagious! I bet this CD
will never gather dust on your shelf. Once you hear it, you will
understand the power and beauty of noise. Do yourself a favor,
listen… and be saved. www.kazumoto.com

Dave Gilden - Unreleased Material - Noise 2000
I bet you
thought Dave is no longer making noise. Ha! You are wrong! Dave has
finally got his life together and is very busy at his new job. I am so
happy for him. Since being here, I have sent a few postcards from some
of the places I have seen and after about three postcards I received a
small package in the mail. It is some really cool shit from Dave that
he said, was his most recent work. This is much more dynamic than
Dave’s prior releases. This cassette contains a lot of short tracks
that are fast paced blender type noise bursts and feedback. There is
very little use of loops and that is one more reason I like this
cassette. Solid noise throughout, progressing and regressing as his
band name suggests. This was recorded in 2000 and has a special feeling
to it, as if Dave is trying to tell us, that this decade will be the
start of more powerful noise to come from the Texas dope fiend himself.
If you have a split that needs a kick ass, well known artist to help
represent the noise that you would magnified all over the planet, than
I highly recommend that you contact Dave and ask him to please
re-engage the noise scene that deeply misses him. Also tell him I
haven’t forgotten his request for some Japanese Hard-core/Punk stuff, I
am just way behind in everything. Thanks! Dave Gilden, 1819 Saxony
Lane, Nassau Bay, Texas 77058, USA

MSBR - Ultimate Ambience 2 - 20 City CD
This CD I bought
from Koji when I went to go see him and PDM perform live in Matsuyama,
Japan. It was a really fun and noisy show, lots of wonderful artists
performed and Matsuyama is a cool place to visit. As for this CD, I was
surprised that it contained the live 1999 show in Chicago that I missed
because I had already moved to Japan. At the time, I was really
devastated because I thought that I would never be able to enjoy that
moment that I looked forward to for so long while living in Chicago.
Thanks to this commanding CD, it is now possible to imagine that night
in my hometown and I thank Koji for that opportunity. MSBR has traveled
extensively to bring his wonderful sound to the world, for that too, I
also thank him. This CD is a perfect example of what to expect when you
are about to experience one of the leaders in noise. Great stuff, I
would highly recommend this CD for the softer, gentler side of MSBR and
the for the ferocious, monster of a noise creator he often is. Get
this! mail@msbr.com - or - www.msbr.com

Government Alpha/Prurient - split - cassette HOS - ???
Before this cassette I had never heard of Prurient, but I thought they
would have to be decent with GA as their split partner. I received this
as a bonus to what I had originally ordered and it continues to be kept
close to my stereo. The Prurient track is a harsh, fast paced, blend of
collage cut-ups and grumbling feedback. A cool listen anywhere, but
while I first experience this piece, I was on the train; and to me it
really accentuated the ride as well as the piece. For the fusion of
sounds truly pushed my daily ride to work to new highs in audio
pleasure. Each side is about 10 to 15 minutes and the contrast of
styles and a perfect compliment to each other. The Government Alpha
side is a bit rhythmic and uses waves of powerful feedback, like a
typhoon to push through your speakers. Droning and pulsing as if
drugged the sound blankets your ears and sweeps into your mind as if it
were alien blood from some si-fi flick. Do your brain a favor, buy
this! You’ll comprehend more of what I mean, when you’re on the subway
going to work or when you wake up, laying face down on the floor only
to realize the gclickh sound of your cassette player turning over was
the most awkward pitch you have ever heard. hospitalprod@hotmail.com

Thirdorgan/Crack Fierce - split cassette -USC -04
Yep, that
right no misprint here… it is not a mistake… these two killer noise
artists are on the same fairly long playing cassette. Now this is what
I call pure ecstasy… I haven’t heard much of Hideki Kato in a long
time. I know he has a cassette on Spite Recordings and I am in the
process of waiting until it arrives. When I get it, I promise to be
sure and review it, (even if it is bad). I highly doubt it will,
because this recording is fucking fantastic and is complimented well
with Akihiro on side one. I would have liked to have seen a
collaboration track between the artists, but there isn’t one. If anyone
knows of such a recording, please contact me. I would love to listen to
it. As for the noise on this cassette, the Thirdorgan side is a
searing, flash of white harsh noise manipulations that are fused
together to aggravate the people around your house, mixed with bursts
of high pitched beeps and other subtle, distracting tones that are
swirled into the mix and regurgitated into rapidly flowing, thick, hot
steaming lava. The Crack Fierce side begins with a series of high
frequency bleeps and screeches, changing into a looped group of slurred
noises that sound quite muffled then is a bit choppy and honed like a
fine instrument. It grumbles through the air as if it had a purpose,
stopping and starting, fading in and out, conglomerated with other
concrete sounds and built up… then other clamor seethed thereupon
it’s looped again along with a harsh laser beam of a sound, creating 2
dramatic pieces. I haven’t able to get in touch with Hideki for a long
time, I hope he will resume answering his mail again soon. As for
Thirdorgan, Akihiro has recently put up a web page. It is pretty cool,
so be sure and check it out. United Syndicate c/o Hideki Kato 2-11-59

Princess Dragon Mom - Patches - Limited to 50 CDs
This baby
is a rare copy and I think it might have been pressed just for their
recent Japanese tour. Back in February, my girlfriend and I took a
seven hour ferry ride to see PDM and MSBR perform. The show was
magnificent and a hell of a lot of fun! I am sure the performance was a
bit tame compared with those in Tokyo, but it gave me an opportunity to
meet the bands and talk with everyone after the show. This CD is a
great representation of that night. There are 4 mind numbing feedback
induced ransacked, grumbling tracks that crackle and pop their way into
your heart just like the little bush that loves to interact with the
people who kick it’s ass. Long live the bush! If you like your noise
chalk filled with static, with a pure crunchy sound that’s fun and down
right, shaky and quaky to the end of each piece. Then you will
absolutely treasure this CD. A great listen while having the TV on
mute… contact PDM on it’s availability. http://timestereo.com

Well, that’s it for now. Thank you very much for taking time-out
to read these comments. Many of these bands have their own pages, so be
sure to look for them on the web. Along with the list above, I suggest
searching for the following: Bizarre Audio Arts, a really cool label
out off Ecuador with a killer catalogue, www.holyterror.com, the sight
of Bob Marinelli, Gameboy Records, Ground Fault Records, and Spite
Records.

Also, if there are any noise artists looking to performing in the
Northern Kyushu or Southern Shikoku areas. Please search for the
following bars on the net: Megahertz in Kitakyushu and Bibros in
Matsuyama, both of sights are in Japanese, but there should be someone
who speaks English. So, be patient… if you need help, you can write
me. I know the owner at Megahertz fairly well.. Great guy and a really
cool place. Merzbow was the last noise show to have performed there.
So, how could you go wrong?

I hope to be posting new reviews fairly regularly from now, so
please be sure to check back here in about once a month. I will be
planning to review something new from: C.C.C.C., Sickness, Abfall, Bob
Marinelli, Richard Ramirez, Aki Mekura, Goat, BLJ, and possibly some
more stuff off of Spite Records, Alienation, and Xerxes. Until then…
think noisy!
